To Maupin we three went.

In search of a warmer climate and lighter tackle we decided to try our first crack at the D in ’08.  It wasn’t hard leaving this…

For a day of this…

The weather was great.  We spent much of the day with the skies slightly overcast minimal winds and the river to ourselves.  There was an early afternoon bwo hatch but no surface action to speak of.  We spent most of the day nymphing various bugs through some very fishy water.  With a few missed connections for us all to speak of Nook finally connected with this decent sized Whitey-Ford.

It seams fitting that this would be the first fish he caught on the maiden voyage of his custom 4 wt rod.  (He and a few of you others got me hooked on fly fishing with a trip to the D and a hand full of Whiteys)

 .

It was a great day on the D.  First of many I would imagine.  I did keep an eye out but never did see this blue hat.  Maybe another day.

Great story Homie. It sure sounds like a memorable one, although not for the catching…at least ya’ll made it over there for a beautiful winter day! Great series of pics too….thanks for the participation B Mesk.

What the hell am I looking for in those bushes?

Yea well the lack of catching was probably more of a user error then a lack of fish. You know I needed to knock some of the rust off. And it didn’t help that I found myself often just taking in nature. Nothing like fish hitting while asleep at the wheel.

Nice freaking rods you’re tying my man. I may hit you up for something trouty. When I have scrilla, of course. Hey Meskel, is that your new house covered in snow?

  5. Meskel says:

That is the new house. But only about half the snow we actually got. It was about 4 feet of snow at one point.
This summer when the river opens up (probably after the kid is born (early June)) I plan on having everyone up for some fishing and BBQ.
Good times will be had by all.

It was a good day and that is my new custom 9ft 4wt in the bush. It was a great day and I’m looking forward to heading over again.

BTW, just left of the hosue there in the bottom right of the photo you see a little bump. That would be our drifter waiting to get on the river. GET A SHOVEL AND LET’S GO!!!
