Gettin’ Jiggy wit it…..

Posted: February 4, 2010 by Hellcat in Fish Reports

Out on a river today with Big Burge, his fly rod and a trusty casting outfit, Nookslayer managed to whack this beauty chunk of Metal with the latter.

Confreakinggratulations Nookness.

Words from the angler….”Burge and I worked hard today. Gin clear water but absolutely beautiful. We had to stalk them and mainly sight cast from distance or cover. Worked a lot of water and then started seeing fish on the way back up.

As I was wading back to the bank I saw this fish in an odd but sweet little spot behind a deep hole next to the root wad of a giant tree that had fallen. It was darting about in some really turbid water. I slowly put my things down and grabbed my rod because if i moved to quickly it would see me. I lost sight of it after my third cast and was reeling back in for another pass and WHAM! It took the jig almost at my feet. I only got to fight it for a minute or two because all I had to do was turn the rod it seemed.

It took 6 strong bonks to the head and the gills cut to finally put it down. As a thank you I received lacerations to my fingers after I thought it was dead (twice) and tried to rinse it off. The teeth before the gils got me.

Thanks to all, and especially BB for the day. This was his first coastal trip. Nookslayer

That metal head was a long time coming. Way to stick with it and get one of those suckers up on the beach. Great work and beautiful fish.

    What color jig?

    Way to keep after it.

That’s a great feeling to finally be rewarded with some steel after a outing or two with no dirty diapers.

Keep up the good work…..and we need to hook up and wet a line or two together man.

Nook, way to lull chrome the way only a fly guy could. Hope to hit the river with you soon and maybe we can get me on the fly and get you get NGO on gear, got a slot that would be great for both. Good on ya Nook.

He got that on a jig, Bearman. “Getting ‘Jiggy’ with it” was supposed to be a giveaway! 🙂

It was a jig under my new FAVORITE Thill float. These things are amazing. The jig was white head, white and red maribou body with two redish beads between the jig head and the body. I’m not sure it made a difference here color wise. That fish was hot and agressive.

Bear, I’d be happy to get you on your fly rod and cover some water. I like to have several rods with me (fly and terminal) so I can cover all the water I see.

Nice job! Also, it is nice to see how you can go from fly to gear when you figure that is what is going to be the most effective. Way to stay after them.
