No net? No problem. Or was it?

Story by Steve Gustafson aka The Hustler

Went fishing today with my favorite fishing buddy, my dad. We got to the boat ramp this morning when I remembered I forgot our net in my garage. We contemplated going back to the house to get it, but dad said “we’ll just tail ’em”.

I thought that sounded good at the time, but neither of us ever having “tailed” a fish, it was going to be something of a miracle. We did have some sticky rubber gloves so it could actually happen. So about 7:30 dad’s rod burries. Fish on!

Plays it a while makes some nice runs and strips a bunch of line and im thinking how the heck am I going to grab this fish. A boat trolls by and we ask to borrow their net. The obliged. Got the net and discovered the fish was a NATE. A very nice ~15# springer was released. Almost exactly an hour later…tug tug tug…dad’s rod goes bonkers!!!!

This was a bigger fish and it was a HATCHERY fish! So I’m back to stressing about landing this pig and sure enough another boat is near by. We ask to borrow their net and they were more than willing. Got this ~20#er in the boat. So, after much celebration we are back in the water fishing. I see a bass boat working the bank and it appears he has a LARGE fish on!

He fought this beautiful springer for more than 20 minutes and hooked it on crankbait. Says he does it all the time. Our net-abled friends lent him their larger net and just as the fish was getting real tired ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ a SeaLion takes the fish down stream never to return. What a let down.

After this, we saw another boat land a fish, on our troll back to the boat dock. Looks like my fish catching days have abruptly dropped off, but a fish in my boat is a win for me…especially when it is my dad catching them….Steve G.
